Having a mother who was an engineer, Bridget Moynihan knew she had the profession in her blood and went to Virginia Tech where she studied to work on transportation engineering projects. However, when she went to Charlotte to work on the CityLynx Gold Line streetcar, she soon found a new passion for transit driving her career.

Moynihan is a transit engineer in the Charlotte office of Aecom. In eight years, she has worked on the Gold line, the Crystal City Streetcar, Atlanta Streetcar and the Portland Streetcar loop. Her experience includes performing and managing track and civil designs from preliminary stages to final design, and construction experience in managing submittal responses, requests for information and providing design and testing support.

Moynihan is also active within the transit community, serving as membership committee chair for the Charlotte Metro Chapter for the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS). She also mentors coworkers and encourages high school students to consider a career in transit engineering.

She is also a member of the APTA Early Career Program Class of 2015

Moynihan lives near a Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) light rail station and uses the system regularly. Watching development explode in the neighborhood with the opening of the line spurs more passion for transit as it shows the value and power of transit projects in the community.

A recent trip to Europe created more vision for Moynihan who saw how inter- and intra-city systems can better connect communities.

“Specifically in my role, one of my favorite things in engineering construction is seeing one of my projects come to life”

“My mom was an engineer, so it was in in my blood to pursue engineering, so I went to Virginia Tech, but my focus was on transportation. It wasn’t until I worked on my first streetcar project that I really got excited about transit and to make a successful system.”

“Find an area you’re passionate about. It’s so much easier to work when you’re passionate about what you do.”
