Greenroads Foundation has welcomed Janet Gonzalez, HDR’s sustainable transportation director, to its governing board of directors.
Established in 2010, Greenroads Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that advances sustainability education and initiatives for transportation infrastructure. As the developer of the Greenroads Rating System, the foundation manages the certification process for sustainable roadway and bridge projects around the world. The rating system guides and scores transportation projects from design through construction for maximum sustainability.
Greenroads encourages infrastructure design that is green and resilient with sustainable funding sources, wide stakeholder support and lower life-cycle and user costs. The organization’s board of directors governs its identity, mission and brand. Board members set goals, create strategies and define values. They also represent Greenroads as ambassadors within the industry. Gonzalez brings the number of board members to nine. During her 2017-2019 term, she will play an active role in overseeing and supporting core programs and publications.
Gonzalez also has joined the board’s Advocacy & Outreach Committee; as a member, she will help educate transportation departments, municipalities and urban planners to fundamentally change the way transportation projects are designed and built. Gonzalez’s experience at HDR spans nearly a decade of transportation planning and project management. She pointed to goals common to Greenroads and her own work with HDR, which will allow her efforts to make a greater impact.
"Sustainable infrastructure is the product of smart planning and smart design, and it’s a key element of thriving communities," Gonzalez said. "Greenroads sets a framework for achieving sustainable infrastructure in a way that is positive and measureable. I am excited to join the board and help further our common mission to create sustainable transportation infrastructure."
Gonzalez’s leadership with Greenroads coincides with her existing roles within the industry. She serves as vice chair of the American Public Transportation Association Sustainability Committee and as a board member for WTS International (Women's Transportation Seminar) Chicago Chapter. She is also a member of the Chicago Chapter of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials, and is a frequent conference contributor, panel member and presenter on the topic of sustainable-infrastructure planning and design trends.
“Janet is a dynamite addition to our board,” said Dr. Jeralee Anderson, Greenroads Foundation executive director. We first worked with her when HDR applied Greenroads to one of its signature projects. We are incredibly fortunate to add her direct user experience and professional expertise to our team, and to have her help us share our sustainability story around the world."
