District Station Achieves LEED Gold Status
The Rock Island County Metropolitan Mass Transit District has announced that their Metro downtown Rock Island, Illinois District Station has achieved LEED Gold status for sustainability achievement. The Station incorporates a number of sustainable elements, including a photovoltaic roof, and occupancy-controlled lighting, and the re-use of rooftop water runoff for the Station’s water feature.
District Station is part of a larger transit-oriented development block located on the corner of 20th Street and 2nd Avenue in downtown Rock Island. The Station is part of a livable communities initiative that incorporates “The Locks,” a 34-unit housing development supporting Rock Island’s economic strategies.
“We are extremely excited that District Station has received this prestigious recognition as a LEED Gold Certified building. The purposeful design and construction of District Station directly aligns with our strategic effects in maintaining and growing an eco-friendly transit system for Quad Cities residents to enjoy," said Jennifer Garrity, manager of administration for MetroLINK.
Brian Hollenback, president and CEO of Growth, stated, “We lead into this partnership with Metro through the development of The Locks, a $6.1 Million, 34-transit oriented housing development in order to strengthen the link between transit and communities. Our partnership with Metro on the Transit Oriented Development transformed the landscape of downtown Rock Island. More than $8.5 Million of new investment transformed an underutilized parking lot into a transit-oriented development that advances Rock Island as a livable, sustainable community. Congratulations to Metro in achieving its LEED Gold status. This recognition strengthens the community’s assets allowing residents to live closer to employment, lower transportation costs, and promote health and wellness opportunities.”
