Capital Area Transit (CAT) celebrates National Bike Month by awarding a free monthly pass each Friday in May to a bike-riding CAT bus passenger who emails a “selfie” photo of their bike and a CAT bus, to CAT at [email protected]. Each Friday during the month of May, a submitted rider “selfie” will be drawn from those received and that rider will receive a free monthly pass good on any CAT fixed-route bus, spokesperson Robert Philbin said.
May is National Bike Month and Friday, May 20 is National Bike to Work Day, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. CAT transports about 1,000 bicycle riders a month, more than 12,000 bike riders a year. That’s 12,000 cars off the roads and the number is growing every year. “The number of bikes on CAT buses has doubled in the last three years,” Philbin said.
“National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and public transit,” he added. “CAT encourages more folks to give biking a try – it’s great exercise, it’s a great way to see your community, and it’s easy to connect with public transit to turn an ordinary bike ride into an adventure.”
For a full day of fun, you might start with a bike ride in the Borough of Carlisle, catch a CAT bus and have lunch across the street from the magnificent State Capitol Building on Third Street in Harrisburg. A leisurely bike ride along the scenic Susquehanna River, a relaxing Wi-Fi Bikes on Buses ride and you’re back home before dinner.
