Systra congratulated Dan Suraci, AICP, lead transportation planner in New York, on receiving the 2017 Emerging Leader Award from the League of American Bicyclists for demonstrating exceptional leadership and advocacy on bicycle mobility.
“Dan is a thoughtful leader on bicycle and transit connectivity,” said Stanley Rosenblum, Systra’s president and CEO. “We’re proud of his recognition, and are excited for him to continue to help our clients develop innovative solutions for facilitating the first/last mile.”
Suraci’s work with bicycle and transit connectivity was central to his nomination. In conjunction with the American Public Transportation Association, Suraci is leading a work group of more than 40 public transit agencies and bike advocates across the United States to produce a series of nationally recommended practices for bicycle and transit connectivity, slated for publication later this year. This guide will include best practices on a broad range of subjects, including on-vehicle storage, safe routes to transit, bike parking, bike share integration, and establishment of dialogue to prioritize cycling.
Responsible for the growth and development of Systra’s multimodal transportation planning practice, Suraci works regularly with public transit agencies to enhance connectivity with active transportation. Prior to Systra, Dan Suraci worked in New York City Department of Transportation’s bicycle program and was communications manager for Bike New York. He is also a daily, all weather bike commuter, instructor, author, and creator of the Derailleur, a comic book aimed at empowering people of all ages to ride.
