The Capital Area Transit Planning Department reports about a 10 percent increase in Bicycle Ridership year to date this year, over the same period last year. From January to June 2016 ridership reached 5,501 bikes; versus 6,086 to date this year, for about a 10 percent increase in ridership.
“Climate is an important factor in bike on bus ridership,” CAT spokesperson Robert Philbin said. “It’s good to see these numbers trending up because that’s 585 additional automobiles not on the road this season, helping to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.” Additionally, the consistent bike rider saves about $9,000 per year in car, gas, and parking expenses.
CAT Bus Routes with the largest Bike Ridership include Routes 12, 8, C, and M.
