October is Rideshare Month, a month dedicated to encouraging commuters to experience the benefits of alternative modes of transportation.
What are alternative modes of transportation?
A form of traveling other than driving alone. Taking the bus or light rail, vanpooling, carpooling, bicycling, and walking are all alternative modes of transportation.
Who benefits from sharing the ride?
- Riders – Reduces stress, wear and tear on vehicle and fuel costs
- Solo drivers – Reduces traffic congestion
- Local businesses – Money saved can be spent in ways that are more enjoyable
- We all do – Reduces air pollution
The proof is in the pudding
“Carpooling is a big money and time saver,” said Everett Russell of Chandler. “It saves me on gas money and about an hour each day, since I can use the HOV lane.”
“The opportunities to share the ride are out there,” said Kevin Myers who rides light rail from Phoenix to Mesa. “You just have to put in a little work to make it work for you, but in the end it’s totally rewarding.”
