In response to the latest developments with the cold and flu season, the SLO Transit system will be expanding its hand sanitizer pilot project to all vehicles.
In late September the transit division installed hand sanitizers on 1/3 of its vehicles, which operate on some of its most popular routes, as part of a provisional test. During this time, Transit staff monitored there: use, durability and the customer response to this amenity. The latest reporting from the CDC, regarding this year’s Flu strand, has prompted Transit Staff to expand the program to the rest of the fleet.
According to “the most recent FluView report for the 2014-2015 flu season shows that flu season in the United States has begun and about half the country is experiencing high levels of flu activity…Activity is expected to continue for several weeks, especially in parts of the country that have not yet seen significant activity” reports the Center for Disease Control Website.
“With hand sanitizing wipes being more and more common at retail stores, expanding this idea to public transit made sense” states Gamaliel Anguiano, transit manager for SLO Transit. “We are already seeing this as popular feature with the transit riding the public” he adds. The hand sanitizer dispensers are conveniently located just past the fareboxes, for use as the passengers enters the vehicle.
