ABQ Ride’s Albuquerque Rapid Transit project is designed to run right by the University of New Mexico on Central Avenue. UNM students are a good user group of ABQ Ride’s service. Just two of the compelling reasons why ABQ Ride is bringing its plans for Albuquerque Rapid Transit to the campus of the University of New Mexico.
Students, faculty and staff are urged to attend an open house and give their input on the project on April 16. An informational table, along with plans for ART stations and proposed alignments for the bus line will be on display from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Building (SUB), Atrium Level.
“This open house is another in our series of public outreach efforts to educate people about ART,” said Bruce Rizzieri, director of ABQ Ride. “We’ve been working with UNM throughout the planning process for ART, so we wanted to afford this integral part of our community a closer look at the latest plans for the service.”
This particular public meeting will focus on several aspects; the locations for ART stations, as well as renderings of what the stations could look like. Plans for the alignment of the roadway, medians and landscaping in the areas around UNM’s Main Campus will also be on display.
ABQ Ride has been reaching out to neighborhoods along the ART with public meetings as far back as fall, 2012. Since then, the department has met with residents in those neighborhoods numerous times. It has also met with other neighborhood associations along the proposed route to incorporate their input into ART plans.
On April 6, 2015, the Albuquerque City Council unanimously approved a bond package that includes $13 million for the Albuquerque Rapid Transit project. The money will be used to secure matching federal money for ART.
