Innovative Illumination on GRTC Buses

Aug. 24, 2015

GRTC buses may catch more attention as innovative illumination signs are tested exclusively in Richmond, Virginia. GRTC, Media Transit Inc. and Light Tape are partnering on this pilot, leading the country in creative transit advertising initiatives.

One illuminated bus display was installed in late June. After weeks of successful testing, a second display will be added on Aug. 25.

Transit Advertising Sales Executive Tim Brazil of Media Transit Inc. explains, “While the displays look like traditional posters during the day, they become illuminated after dark when the driver turns the headlights on.  These will offer much higher visibility for the advertiser and the bus.”

Advertising campaign effectiveness will extend beyond daylight hours through the night to create 24-hours of improved ad visibility produced by Light Tape’s backlit system.

Even in heavy rain, the illuminated bus display stands out, as shown on this GRTC bus.

LightTape President Steve Pendlebury says, “We are really excited about the opportunity to work with GRTC to integrate Light Tape into their transit advertising space. GRTC is clearly a leader in innovative urban transportation with their ‘green’ movement utilizing natural gas buses to reduce emissions. Light Tape has the same impact potential to innovate the transit advertising and position the space differently in people’s minds.”

After testing in the Richmond area is complete, Light Tape anticipates making this unique product available to the rest of the country in January.
