Tallahassee City Commissioners recently approved a permanent program to allow low-income veterans to ride StarMetro buses for free.
The Veterans Bus Pass Program started as a pilot program in October 2014. It provides low-income veterans with free transportation aboard StarMetro fixed route buses. Since its inception, 446 annual bus passes have been distributed through the program, providing more than 60,000 trips for veterans on the StarMetro system.
“As one of the most veteran-friendly communities in America, we are proud to work every day to meet the needs of those that have valiantly served our country,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “The continuation of the Veterans Bus Pass Program is an innovative approach to connecting our community’s veterans with the services and resources they need, and we look forward to the program’s continued success.”
The program is for low-income veterans, including those who are homeless. To receive a bus pass, qualified veterans should complete an application that will be processed through the Leon County Veterans Center.
According to the Veterans Service Center, there are approximately 19,000 veterans living in Leon County.
