The New York City Department of Transportation and New York City Transit are assessing the proposed implementation of Select Bus Service on the Q52/Q53 route and stop consolidation on the Q22 route in the Rockaways neighborhood of Queens. The project aims to make the existing bus service substantially faster and more reliable while maintaining needed traffic flow and parking, and also making the corridor safer for all users. VHB is providing civil and traffic engineering, as well as bus operations planning services.
VHB is assessing and analyzing the operations of these bus routes to identify key bottleneck areas, sources of bus delay, major trip generators, bus stop spacing, and more. Based on these assessments, the team will recommend improvements to increase the efficiency of bus operations for these routes, including decreasing delays to encourage increased ridership. VHB is verifying the feasibility of constructing each proposed Select Bus Service station at the identified locations along these routes.
This is the fourth corridor (including Woodhaven Boulevard in Queens and 79th Street and 86th Street in Manhattan) for which VHB is contributing to the implementation of Select Bus Service improvements following our work on the New York City Bus Rapid Transit Study. The earlier project included corridor planning and analysis for Fordham Road/Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, 34th Street and Fifth/Madison Avenue in Manhattan, and Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island.
