L.A. Metro exploring options to best support students during school closures
Due to school district closures because of the coronavirus, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) says it is exploring options on how best to support students during this time, including ways to ensure students can access the family resource center being proposed by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
L.A. Metro staff will present its findings to the L.A. Metro Board of Directors for consideration.
L.A. Metro says it is committed to serving the community’s transportation needs, including during emergencies and important events such as elections, when it has offered free rides throughout the system. L.A. Metro says it will continue this commitment to serve Los Angeles County as the coronavirus situation persists.
“In times like these it is evident that public transit is a vital lifeline for communities who need us to keep people moving,” said L.A. Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “It is imperative that public transit always be supported so that we can continue to move people in emergencies or to employment, medical appointments or educational institutions.”
L.A. Metro also notes it is dedicated to ensuring a safe and healthy transit experience and is closely coordinating with the L.A. County Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure an appropriate response to the coronavirus is taken. L.A. Metro has formed an internal task force to guide its response to the coronavirus, drawing on past experiences with public health situations such as influenza, SARS and H1N1.
L.A. Metro has strengthened sanitation operations at Los Angeles Union Station and other transit hubs, with an increased focus on cleaning and sanitizing high touchpoint areas such as handrails, restrooms, tables and chairs, railings and ticket vending machines. Buses and trains are cleaned on a daily basis. L.A. Metro says it continues to review its cleaning protocols to ensure they’re adequate as the situation evolves.
