New Flyer of America and Solaris have added to their bus orders in Canada.
New Flyer of America
New Flyer of America has secured two orders from Durham Region Transit (DRT). The orders include seven Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ 40-foot battery-electric buses and 36 Xcelsior® 40-foot clean-diesel buses.
“Since 1988, New Flyer has been a trusted partner to DRT, delivering safe, reliable and accessible public transit solutions for their communities,” said NFI President Chris Stoddart. “This latest investment underscores our shared commitment to enhancing mobility and improving the passenger experience. Through continuous innovation and strategic investments—like expanding our Winnipeg facility to support an all-Canadian bus manufacturing initiative—New Flyer is strengthening Canada’s transit ecosystem for future generations.”
“These New Flyer buses will enhance the Durham Region Transit fleet to support our mission of delivering sustainable, efficient public transit services for the communities we serve,” said DRT General Manager Bill Holmes.
Solaris
Solaris will be delivering its first trolleybuses to TransLink. The contract involves the delivery of 107 units of 12-meter (39-foot) trolleybuses. The agreement also includes options for up to 201 units of 12-meter trolleybuses and up to 204 units of 18-meter (59-foot) articulated trolleybuses.
The first deliveries of trolleybuses are scheduled for 2026, with continued deliveries in 2027. To date, Solaris has delivered more than 5,500 zero-emission vehicles, including battery-electric buses, hydrogen buses and trolleybuses operating in over 30 countries.
"This agreement marks a significant milestone for Solaris and is a testimony to our commitment to becoming the leading supplier of zero-emission buses in North America. We are grateful to TransLink for their trust in Solaris and our products,” said Solaris Bus & Coach CEO Javier Iriarte. “Solaris is the undiscussed European leader of trolleybuses, and this new order with options has the potential to become the largest procurement in Solaris history. It is an honor to be part of this collaboration, and I am confident that this partnership will be highly successful, with our vehicles meeting and surpassing their expectations.”
Solaris notes that in 2017, the Solaris Urbino 12 electric (40-foot battery-electric bus) was awarded the Bus of the Year, and in 2024, the Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen (60-foot fuel cell electric vehicle) was selected as the Bus of The Year 2025 in Europe.
"In Europe, the Solaris brand is widely recognized for the quality and superior performance of its zero-emission vehicles, including trolleybuses. We aim to bring the same service-proven technology to Canadian transit authorities. Our commitment is to support the transition to zero-emission transportation in cities across Europe and North America by developing and delivering the most reliable and innovative products," Iriarte said.
