New Flyer of America receives bus orders from York Region Transit, MTA
NFI Group Inc. (NFI) subsidiary New Flyer of America Inc. (New Flyer), has agreed to bus order contracts with York Region Transit (YRT) and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA).
YRT
New Flyer will be supplying YRT with 170 Xcelsior® clean-diesel transit buses. The contract is part of NFI’s Q4 2024 backlog and includes 72 Xcelsior clean-diesel 40-foot buses and 98 Xcelsior clean-diesel 60-foot buses. NFI says the buses will be delivered over the next three years and, in combination with YRT’s previous 2023 purchase of 75 Xcelsior CHARGE NG® battery-electric buses (BEB), will enhance YRT’s service on both regular routes and the York Viva bus rapid transit rapid ways.
NFI says YRT’s 535-vehicle fleet is one of the largest bus fleets in Ontario, serving a population of more than 1.2 million people.
“New Flyer’s Xcelsior clean-diesel buses lead to improved efficiency and lower operating costs, and the new fleet is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing YRT’s vital mission of connecting communities across the York region,” said Chris Stoddart, president of North American Bus and Coach. “Additionally, the buses will ensure a quiet, clean and comfortable ride for commuters throughout the Greater Toronto Area.”
MTA
New Flyer will be awarding the MTA 117 buses. The award consists of:
- 50 Xcelsior® 40-foot hybrid-electric buses.
- 20 Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ 40-foot BEBs awarded in Q4 2024.
- An additional 37 Xcelsior 40-foot hybrid-electric buses and 10 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 60-foot BEBs awarded in Q1 2025.
“NFI and its subsidiaries have delivered over 1,200 buses to the agency over the past 30 years,” Stoddart said. “The combination of hybrid and battery-electric buses offers a seamless implementation process, an opportunity to significantly reduce emissions in the short term and a scalable pathway to achieving their sustainability goals. Additionally, all models are built on our proven Xcelsior platform and feature a high degree of commonality in parts and service operations, ensuring efficiency and reliability across their fleet.”
