GILLIG previewed its zero-emission battery electric bus on April 30 at its Livermore, Calif., facility to an audience of 180 customers and transit professionals from around the nation.
In May, GILLIG and Cummins will officially launch the 40-foot GILLIG Battery Electric Bus at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Bus & Paratransit Mobility Conference in Louisville, Ky. This bus, powered by Cummins, is available for order for delivery in 2020.
“We are thrilled today to showcase our new zero-emission battery electric bus,” said Derek Maunus, GILLIG president and CEO. “The GILLIG Battery Electric Bus is designed to fit in seamlessly with our customers’ existing fleets, and it complements our portfolio of clean-energy vehicles, allowing us to continue to support our customers with the best transit buses no matter their propulsion requirements. Additionally, our partnership with Cummins enables us to offer our customers an unmatched nationwide service and support network.”
Attendees at the GILLIG Battery Electric Bus Showcase were treated to rides on the battery electric bus, demonstrations and various breakout sessions with GILLIG’s strategic business partners, Cummins and ChargePoint.
“We’ve been partners with GILLIG for a long time,” noted attendee Donna DeMartino, CEO, San Joaquin Regional Transit District, “and we are thrilled that a manufacturer of GILLIG’s stature and experience has entered the battery electric market with their offering. I was amazed by the quality, design and safety features of the bus, and it was wonderful to see the detailed strategy that went into its design and planning. I was also impressed by GILLIG’s honesty. In all our dealings with GILLIG, they have always been consistent and honest, never overpromising.”
AC Transit General Manager Mike Hursh remarked, “Because it’s a GILLIG, we have great confidence in the quality of this Battery Electric Bus. With GILLIG’s integrity, reliability and easily accessible engineering and technical support, it’s a win-win for everyone.”
“Cummins is excited that many of GILLIG’s loyal customers are able to get a sneak peek at our best-in-class fully electric bus solution,” said Julie Furber, vice president – electrified power, Cummins. “With GILLIG, we’ve partnered to create a quality, dependable battery electric system that truly meets the needs of our customers. We’re ready to get the Cummins-powered GILLIG bus into their hands and on the road.”
As California transit professionals strive to meet the state’s mandate requiring 100 percent zero-emission fleets by 2040, GILLIG’s zero-emission battery electric buses are available to help meet those goals. Because of its exclusive partnership with Cummins, GILLIG has first access to the Cummins electrified powertrain system for heavy-duty transit buses. In addition, GILLIG has partnered with ChargePoint, the leading electric vehicle (EV) charging network, to provide customized charging solutions that strategically manage each customer's unique energy and cost requirements.
