BEBs begin return to service on MCTS’ CONNECT 1 BRT
Milwaukee County Transit System’s (MCTS) battery-electric buses (BEB) have begun returning to service.
In August, Nova Bus, the manufacturer of the BEBs, recalled the batteries inside the buses. Although Nova Bus declared the buses safe to drive, MCTS removed the BEBs from service. Clean diesel buses continued the high-frequency service along the CONNECT 1 bus rapid Transit (BRT) line. Nova Bus has issued all new batteries at no charge to MCTS as the buses remain under warranty.
“Milwaukee County’s battery electric buses are part of the county’s comprehensive plan to improve quality of life for our entire community by reducing emissions, creating a healthier tomorrow,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “The success and popularity of the new CONNECT 1 BRT line as a way to commute to work or explore Milwaukee on the weekends is another way we have created a healthier county, one where everyone has access to the services they need to thrive," Crowley said.
Two new BEBs join the fleet
MCTS says the electric buses will start returning to the mixed fleet of both battery electric and clean diesel buses through November. In addition, two new BEBs have arrived, bringing the total number serving the BRT to 11. The new NovaBus LFSes will be #1009 and #1010 on the CONNECT 1 BRT line on Sept. 28. The next four electric buses on order to complete the fleet of 15 are expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2024.
