MAX Transit Dedicates and Opens New Operations Facility

The transit system for the greater Holland/Zeeland area officially dedicated and opened its new $4.7 million operations facility on Greenway Drive on Oct. 4 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and public open house attended by more than 140 guests.
The facility was funded with 80 percent federal capital grants and 20 percent matching state funds. The new 33,500 sq. ft. facility includes an inside bus storage for 28 buses, a conference/training center, central dispatch, office areas, driver lounge and patio, and locker room area. DLZ of Lansing designed the building, which was constructed by Lakewood Construction of Holland.

Alstom and Italian Railways FS Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Pendolino

Alstom and Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pendolino at Milan's Central Station in Italy.
Two Pendolino models were presented; the ETR 401, the first prototype produced in 1974 at Alstom's Savigliano factory in Italy and the ETR 450, the first model to enter commercial service in 1988 on the Milan to Rome line.
Pierre-Louis Bertina, managing director of Alstom Transport Italy, offered the original patent of the first model to the FS Foundation represented by Mauro Morretti, managing director of the Italian railways.

Parsons Brinckerhoff Awarded Contract for Detroit Streetcar Project

The city of Detroit has awarded a contract to Parsons Brinckerhoff for design review and construction quality assurance services for the Woodward Avenue Streetcar Project.
The 3.2-mile-long streetcar line is being designed and built by M-1 Rail and will run along Woodward Avenue from the city’s downtown, through midtown, to the New Center area, and includes 11 stations with connections to Amtrak and the Detroit People Mover.
Completion of the project is slated for the fall 2015.

Metro Bus Shelters Get Artsy Makeover in Cincinnati

ArtWorks partnered with Metro and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County to transform 24 shelters in downtown and Over-the-Rhine into colorful public art featuring popular books.
ArtWorks Lead Artist Ryan Little and Teaching artist Brandon Parker led the six youth Apprentices between the ages of 14 and 21 in designing the graphic prints for the Metro Art Shelter Project.
The dedication for the Metro Art Shelter Project was celebrated on Sept. 26 at a bus shelter near the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County Main Library downtown on Walnut Street.

SouthWest Transit Opens East Creek Station

SouthWest Transit’s newest park-and-ride, East Creek Station, officially opened for service on Sept. 23, providing express service to downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota.
Located in Chaska, Minn., East Creek Station has 675 stalls. The station/passenger waiting area is climate controlled, with vending machines and TV monitors for customer viewing as well as for disseminating up to date information. The station is equipped with Wi-Fi and a state of the art security system.
The ramp and station are ecofriendly and will be identified and used as a trail head for access onto the many local bike and hiking trails.

ABQ Ride Constructs and Displays Albuquerque's Latest Parklet

ABQ Ride is helping Albuquerque join a growing movement to turn some urban parking spaces in the city into parklets by opening one in the parking lot of the student services building at Central New Mexico Community College on Sept. 24.
As part of its eight-month long “Clear the Air” campaign, ABQ Ride will convert four parking spaces into a small park. Seating and greenery will be provided by the parks and recreation department.

Bombardier Presents Flexity 2 Trams for the Gold Coast, Australia

Bombardier Transportation presented the first Bombardier Flexity 2 tram for the Gold Coast Light Rail system on Sept. 20.
The GCLRT project is part of an 18-year public private partnership contract between the Queensland state government and GoldLinQ. As operator franchisee of stage one of the GCLRT, GoldLinQ, a consortium that includes Bombardier Transportation, is responsible for the design, construction, operations and maintenance. The first phase of the project will connect Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach. The line will be serviced by a fleet of 14 seven-module Flexity 2 trams, to be delivered by Bombardier over the next four months.

Nomad Digital Wins Wi-Fi Service Contract for New Eurostar Fleet

Nomad Digital will install Wi-Fi on the new Eurostar e320 fleet.
Contracted by Siemens to supply Wi-Fi systems on 10 e320 trains, Nomad’s technology will be installed on the new fleet ahead of delivery to Eurostar.
The introduction of the new e320 trains is part of Eurostar’s £700million investment in its fleet. This includes the complete overhaul and refurbishment of the existing fleet as well as the purchase of 10 new e320 trains from Siemens.

SFMTA Unveils New and Enhanced Bicycle-Friendly Green Waves
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) announced four new green waves as well as enhancements to the city’s three existing green waves. A green wave uses modified traffic signal timing along a street so that bicyclists encounter a series of green lights as they progress down a corridor.
As part of an ongoing effort to improve the safety, comfort and convenience of bicycling in San Francisco, the SFMTA will be implementing new two-way green waves on Arguello Street, Folsom Street, Fulton Street and North Point Street. Implementation is anticipated to take place in spring 2014.
