We always welcome contributed content to Mass Transit. Below are some general guidelines. For additional information or questions not answered here, you can email [email protected]

About our Publication

Mass Transit magazine is the only direct-request publication exclusively dedicated to covering the public transportation industry in the U.S. and Canada. We promote best practices for integrated mobility by covering industry news, producing special reports, analyzing industry trends and developing in-depth profiles of transit agencies. Our coverage connects people and ideas through content that engages and educates readers as they navigate the new mobility frontier.

Submitting Content to Mass Transit

All pitches and submissions should be emailed to the editorial team. Send a brief abstract (one or two paragraphs) via e-mail to one of the contacts listed below. The abstract must clearly describe what the proposed article will cover and who will author the article. If it fits within our audience's needs, we will provide a tentative publication date and deadline for the completed article. We cannot guarantee publication until we have reviewed and approved the completed article.

Please contact either Associate Editor Brandon Lewis or Associate Editor Noah Kolenda:

Note: Editorial material is selected for its informative value to the reader. The placement of advertisements in Mass Transit magazine does not play a role in the selection of editorial content.

Content Types

Feature Articles

Mass Transit expects its contributors to maintain a stance of neutrality within their articles; no proselytizing or veiled marketing will be accepted. Content from outside authors will be held to the same standard as the brand's staff-written articles. Articles must be NON-COMMERCIAL, unbiased and informative. Special consideration is given to articles bylined by a transit agency or system. Anything that is overly commercial or blatantly pitches a product will be declined.

Article Specs

Length: Target word count is ~1,000-1,400.

Format: Microsoft Word document. Do NOT send a pdf.

Title, Subtitle and Subheadings: Please include a suggested title, subtitle and suggested subheadings for the article submitted. These suggestions may be edited by our staff after submission for engagement, SEO and copyfit purposes.

Byline: All articles must be authored by a person and not a company. Please include a brief author biography at the end of the article (2–3 sentences). We also require a headshot of the author. Articles may have more than one author.

Tone: Articles must remain unbiased and non-commercial. Any advertorial language will be removed, and anything that blatantly pitches a product/service/company will be declined.

Citations: Only educational external links are permitted, such as linking to a source, research or resource. Hyperlinks will be included at the editorial team’s discretion. Any links to products or companies will not be permitted.

Artwork: It is preferred for contributed content to also include artwork. Please supply high-resolution (300 dpi) photos, as large as you have available. Photos should be in horizontal alignment, including headshots. No logos. Send artwork files separately as attachments to the email; do not embed them in the Word document.

Photo Captions and Attribution: Include captions AND image credits at the end of the manuscript. Do not attempt to overlay or include a caption in the artwork source file. Provide a suggestion for how to credit each photo with each caption.

IMPORTANT! Copyright infringement is a serious infraction. Do NOT submit artwork, graphics, drawings or manuscripts that you do not own or have express written permission to distribute. You must be able to demonstrate ownership of artwork. We will not accept Pixabay, Shutterstock or other alternative royalty free photos as they can still trigger copyright claims.

Copyright: We require all content to be exclusive to Mass Transit magazine (original to our publication). This includes company blogs or social media posts. All contributors will be required to sign/return a contributor agreement once the editorial team accepts the content. This agreement acknowledges that the article is original and that we have your permission to publish and distribute it. Please do not attempt to modify this agreement. If you have concerns, please contact Mass Transit Editor in Chief Megan Perrero: [email protected]

Editorial Review: All content is subject to revision by the editorial staff. You will not be notified of edits; please expect that some will be made. Mass Transit adheres to AP style, as well as our in-house style. The editorial team retains the right to run a contributed article as an op-ed if we feel the piece is informative but is biased to a certain viewpoint.

Blogs/Op-Eds

Mass Transit accepts op-eds or blogs on a rolling basis. These may be styled as a column, blog or letter to the editor. While op-eds aren’t expected to maintain a neutral tone, they should still focus on being informative and should not include marketing language.
