It's not only Mr. Smith who is going to Washington these days — add 51 new Orion VII transit buses to the list. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) purchased 26 Orion VII clean diesel and 25 Orion VII diesel-electric series hybrid buses as a part of a replacement program of its current fleet of Orion V models that were introduced in 1997.
"The Orion VII is a good quality product that suits our needs and is being delivered to our schedule." stated Phil Wallace, general superintendant of bus maintenance for the Washington
Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. "The Orion transit buses are reliable with a proven track record, just another reason we selected Orion."
Beautiful Bus, Beautiful Environment
Taking a cue from European styling, the exterior of the Orion VII bus proudly wears its "bus rapid transit" (BRT) styling, putting the roof mounted hybrid energy storage unit and air conditioner out of view with its captivating bodylines. Rich, glossy paint ensures eye-catching curb appeal and makes the Orion VII look sleek and sporty. Optional polished Alcoa aluminum wheels complete the exterior styling. The interior provides a comfortable, spacious cabin for Metro passengers, and low-floor design makes boarding easier and more accessible. Optional LED lighted turn signals and marker lights provide an added safety feature.
However, the Orion VII isn't just aesthetically beautiful; it also allows the environment to remain beautiful with both the BAE series diesel-electric hybrid and clean diesel models, which meet stringent 2010 EPA compliance standards.
A 280-hp Cummins ISL powers the clean diesel Orion VII backed by an Allison B 400 R transmission. The BAE Hybrid Series is also powered by a 280-hp Cummins ISB engine backed by BAE's series hybrid system which sports a 123 Lithium-Ion battery pack. A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system work in conjunction with both the diesel and hybrid emissions system to reduce environmental emissions. The Orion VII is cost efficient to both owner and operator and yet, provides environmentally conscious operation.
"We have a long relationship with the District of Columbia," states Patrick Scully, chief commercial officer for Daimler Buses North America. "We are pleased WMATA has selected again the Orion VII for its proven durability and reliability."
