RTC's New 'Ride Tracker' Mobile Website Gives Bus Arrival Times
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) today launched "Ride Tracker," a new GPS-based, mobile website that will enable transit riders to easily see when buses are due to arrive.
"More and more people are carrying smartphones and want to be able to get information about their commute," said Tina Quigley, RTC general manager. "At the RTC, we are continuously working to utilize the latest technology to provide the public with the information they need and want. Ride Tracker is our newest tool to make riding transit easier and more user-friendly."
A predictive, mobile optimized webpage, Ride Tracker will provide transit riders with the most up-to-date information about their transit commute. Currently more than 57 million residents and visitors use the RTC for various transit needs annually.
Ride Tracker gives transit riders the ability to view and check the status of all routes servicing a stop. Customers can also view a vehicle's current location along a route via a Google map that can be continually refreshed to show the vehicle's progress.
The Ride Tracker mobile website utilizes GPS technology in coordination with predictive scheduling to provide riders with an updated status of a vehicle's location.
The new mobile website also can show riders the five closest stops to their current location (a feature available only on smartphones equipped with GPS and Internet service).
Free to use, Ride Tracker was developed by the RTC's in-house technology staff, and is the latest technology-based tool focused on keeping the public informed about their commute. It joins rideRTC, which provides bus schedule information via text message and FAST Freeway Traffic Alerts, which provide traffic and incident updates from local freeways and arterials via email or text message.
In addition to the launch of the new Ride Tracker, the RTC will also launch a new website that will make it more convenient for customers to obtain information about the transportation agency, from updates on roadway projects to transit service alerts. The new website will utilize graphics to make it more intuitive and easier to navigate.
