Parsons Brinckerhoff, a global infrastructure strategic consulting, planning, engineering and program/construction management organization, has appointed John Munro, a tunnel services specialist and executive from its Australia office, as Director of the firm's Mechanical & Electrical Technical Excellence Center (TEC).
In his new position, Mr. Munro provides leadership and strategic direction to the TEC with a focus on growing the firm's tunnel and underground infrastructure business, enhancing marketing capabilities, and strengthening client relationships. He has relocated to the United States and will work from Parsons Brinckerhoff's New York City headquarters.
Mr. Munro has over 25 years of industry experience, predominately in tunnel technology and fire engineering strategies, on a global basis. He was responsible for the tunnel fire safety design for the recently opened Airport Link project in Brisbane, a multi-billion-dollar combined toll road and busway that is now Australia's longest road tunnel. As the manager of tunnel technology at the Roads and Traffic Authority in Australia, Mr. Munro was responsible for developing policy and standards for road tunnel fire safety in addition to overseeing the delivery of tunnel fire safety solutions for numerous new and existing tunnels. He held a similar position with the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RailCorp) developing fire safety policy and standards for new and existing rail tunnels in addition to leading research and risk assessments as well as project delivery roles.
Mr. Munro was a member of the Standards Australia committee for the development of a recently published road and rail tunnel fire safety standard and has written extensively on the subject of tunnel safety. He was also a member of the PIARC (Permanent International Association of Road Congresses, now called The World Road Association) committee on road tunnel operations. He holds a master of science degree in fire safety engineering from the University of Ulster, a master of public administration from the University of Sydney, and a bachelor of civil engineering and a diploma in industrial studies from the University of Ulster. He was recently invited to become a Fellow of Engineers Australia.
