University of Kentucky Installs 9 New Bike Shelters & Promotes Ridership
On Aug. 14 – EdR, the development group heading the $25.8M revitalization project for the University of Kentucky, held an open house to celebrate the completion of Phase 1.
This first Phase includes the addition of approximately 1,800 dormitory beds and nine bike parking shelters. Phase 2 will offer approximately 2,000 additional dormitory beds, and 8-10 more bike shelters. The bike shelters are located outside of Champions Court, Woodland Glen, and Hagen Dormitories and provide between 12-24 protected parking spaces per awning. The shelters range in size from 9’ x 19’ – 9’ x 38’, are constructed of steel, have 8mm transparent polycarbonate roofs, and are finished in a low VOC black powder coat. The shelters were manufactured and installed by Brasco International.
The installation of the bike shelters along with the building design and construction efforts made by the University of Kentucky has earned them a Silver LEED Certification. Meeting ratio requirements for bed count / covered bike parking spaces offered the additional needed LEED credits for certification.
Before the event began, Scott Christie, sales manager of Brasco International’s Bike Product Line, and Shane Tedder, Director of Sustainability for the university appropriately toured the campus via bicycle as Tedder explained UK’s sustainability goals, and Phase 2 details. UK already offers a student bike facility where students can learn to fix their bikes for free, as well as a bike library where students can “check out” bikes, also for free. UK recently purchased 160 bikes to add to the library for incoming students who plan to not bring cars to campus. Bike lanes exist throughout the UK campus, and street sharing paths are being added to all new street developments.
