The city of San Luis Obispo’s SLO Transit system is experiencing record ridership.
August and September are not only the start of the school year but generally also a time of up-tick in public transit use. This appears to be the case with this past September setting a new all-time record in ridership. There were 81,164 trips provided this September compared to 77,606 this same month last year, representing a 4.5 percent increase.
This single month record follows on the heels of the earlier reported record in ridership set during the City’s last fiscal year (FY 13/14 1,147,748 riders). City staff points to a growing national trend, in the use of public transit, as part of the reason for the record ridership.
“We aim to further foster this growth by adopting amenities, such as Free Wi-Fi; which attract and help retain ridership. We also continually work with partnering organizations to make sure residents are educated and are aware of the benefits of using SLO Transit” states Transit Manager Gamaliel Anguiano.
In addition to offering an orientation to public transit during CalPoly’s WOW week, SLO Transit has various promotions throughout the year so that local residents can experience SLO Transit for themselves. From Oct. 20-24, residents can use SLO Transit for free in honor of rideshare month. City officials encourage local residents to visit their webpage regularly or to follow them on social media to stay abreast of some of these upcoming promotions.
