RTC’s Club Ride Commuter Services Receives National Recognition
Club Ride Commuter Services, a free program of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) received the Clean Air Excellence Award for “Community Action” from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The award recognizes innovative state, local, tribal and private sector programs that protect health and the environment, educate the public, serve their communities and boost the economy. Judged by the EPA and members of the Clean Air Act Advisory Committee, the Community Action award applies to the community partnership efforts that directly and indirectly reduce emissions of air pollutants or greenhouse gases.
Club Ride Commuter Services is designed to improve air quality and encourage alternative commutes such as riding transit, carpooling, vanpooling, walking, motorcycling, bicycling, telecommuting and compressed work weeks. By creating an incentive for commuters to use alternative methods of transportation, in 2014, Club Ride registered more than 10,000 new commuters who reported more than 1 million clean commutes and reduced nearly 60 tons of carbon monoxide from our environment. Commuters also saved $1.6 million by reducing nearly 6 million miles from Southern Nevada roads, or approximately 240 trips around the world.
"We have been working diligently with our program partners to create a cleaner, more sustainable community," said RTC General Manager Tina Quigley. "We are proud to receive this great accolade and to share it with our partners as we continue to improve the quality of life for the millions of people who live, work and play in Southern Nevada.”
Club Ride recognizes the unique 24-hour workforce in Clark County and has tailored the program to meet the needs of each employer. Outreach coordinators conduct over 650 worksite and community events every year, including health fairs, orientations, and special events such as Bike Week and Earth Day. Additionally, Club Ride educates commuters about using the city’s infrastructure to improve air quality and reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles on the road.
