Pinellas County will have new buses next year — hybrids.
The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) Board of Directors voted 8-7 in favor of purchasing seven 2016 Gillig hybrid‐electric buses as part of its bus replacement plan.
Currently, PSTA has 61 hybrid buses, which equates to nearly 30 percent of the entire fleet — more than any transit agency in the state.
Included in the vote was an approval from the board for PSTA staff to submit a federal grant application for “Lo-No” grant funds to purchase electric buses. If approved, PSTA will be able to pilot all-electric buses in the county.
PSTA will continue to explore all-electric bus options.
