RT Police Has Second Year of Crime Reductions

Jan. 19, 2016

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) Police Services saw a second year of decrease in crime for 2015.

RT Police Services (RTPS) reports that in 2015 there were 60 thefts to persons occurring on trains, buses, or at stations out of approximately 26 million trips per year. This number is an 11 percent reduction compared to 2014 during the same time period. RTPS has had a 35 percent reduction in these crime categories since 2013 in which 92 thefts were reported. In addition to the lowering of thefts, RTPS also had a 46 percent arrest rate when thefts did occur in 2015.

The lower crime numbers and high arrest clearance rate can be partially attributed to the benefit of a robust surveillance camera system that covers RT’s stations and all RT trains and buses. In addition to the extensive video surveillance system, RTPS officers are relentlessly following up on all theft incidents, which have resulted in quicker identification of suspects and ending their crime spree much sooner.

In 2016, RT is working to bring riders a new reporting phone app which will make for easier reporting of nuisance behavior, crime, and facilities issues. RTPS is also working to increase fare inspections and will be enforcing new rules and ordinances which we hope will make the riding experience more enjoyable.

RT would like to remind all riders that electronics (phone and tablet devices) are the main items stolen. To decrease the likelihood of being victimized, it is important to be aware of your surroundings, use the text tip line to report suspicious subjects, and do not leave your valuables unsecured. RT encourages riders to “See It – Hear It – Report It.” To text a tip to RTPS, text to 67283 and begin your message with sacrt.
