More than 7,200 organizations provide public transportation in the U.S. and many of those participate in this yearly event. The day is dedicated to raising awareness that public transportation helps improve the environment and conserves fuel. It also offers the opportunity for communities to flourish and expand. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) estimates for every dollar invested in public transportation, the economic return is $4.
Public transportation systems help to create a healthier environment by reducing pollutants and greenhouses gases. Research from APTA shows that public transportation reduces carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons and saves the equivalent of 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline in the United States annually. Locally, TransIT Services of Frederick County provided more than 760,000 trips in fiscal year 2015.
