VIA Metropolitan Transit is displaying new, green flags to signal an important environmental achievement. VIA has earned certification from the International Standards Organization (ISO) for its proactive efforts to provide sustainable service through its Environmental and Sustainability Management System (ESMS).

VIA is the first agency in the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Region 6, a five-state region, to earn the ISO 14001 certification. The green-and-white flags have been placed at three locations that have been certified by the ISO, which sets worldwide standards and has published more than 20,500 international standards covering almost every industry. The flags are flying at VIA’s Maintenance facility, 1720 N. Flores St., Administration Building, 800 W. Myrtle St., and the VIA Metro Center, 1021 San Pedro Ave.

“This certification from the ISO recognizes VIA’s continued efforts to ensure good environmental stewardship goes hand-in-hand with good service,” VIA Deputy CEO Keith Hom said. “VIA is proud to be the first transit agency in FTA Region 6 to be certified by this esteemed organization for our strong commitment to managing our environmental impact.”

VIA’s ESMS policy was adopted in December 2014, and focuses on pollution prevention and regulatory compliance practices. The certification affirms VIA’s efforts to remain current with industry practices, and be a good steward of the environment.
