Sunday, August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day. To honor seniors Colorado Springs, Mountain Metropolitan Transit has invited anyone 60 years old and over to ride the city bus for free on that day. Public transportation can be a wonderful option for seniors who want to save money and would like someone else to do the driving.
“This is a great opportunity for seniors to try out the city’s bus service. Public transit can help seniors maintain their independence by providing a convenient, low-cost transportation option”, commented Craig Blewitt, director Mountain Metropolitan Transit. “For seniors who would like to use the city bus system, but don’t know how it all works, we also offer free travel training.”
The AARP recently designated Colorado Springs as an Age-Friendly Community. The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities helps participating communities become great places to live by creating features such as safe, walkable streets and better housing and transportation options. Transportation is often an issue for seniors and the city’s public transportation system can help ensure that seniors maintain their independence. The Colorado State Demography Office projects that the 65 and over population in the Pikes Peak region will increase from 68,000 in 2010 to 176,500 in 2040. Communities that embrace age-friendly concepts, such as frequent and reliable public transportation, will help seniors stay healthy and active longer.
