The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) in Louisville recently added six zero-emission, battery-electric Proterra Catalyst buses to their fleet. Now with a total of 15 ZEV buses on the road, the Bluegrass State's largest city has the biggest deployment of Proterra transit vehicles east of the Rockies.
Providing the Louisville community with cleaner air, fuel conservation and maintenance cost savings, the Proterra transit EVs replace fossil fuel buses that were 16 years old and traveled more than 600,000 miles. This update will enable TARC to eliminate 60,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually along with 30,000 lbs of tailpipe emissions.
To mark the initial revenue service of the new Proterra buses, TARC held an event at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, where TARC Executive Director J. Barry Barker hosted Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth and officials of Churchill Downs Racetrack, the Kentucky Derby Museum and Proterra Inc. Sustainability officials on hand noted how the buses will play a big part in furthering the community's climate change mitigation and environmental goals.
