To celebrate National Bike Month in May, the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) has invited bicyclists to discover how easy — and quick — it is to Bike & Ride. DART has bike racks on every bus, and during the month of May riders who load their bike on the front of the bus will ride free.

“We encourage residents in the metro to bike to work, school or any destination during National Bike Month. Using DART bike racks can extend or speed up your bike trip,” said DART Chief Engagement and Communications Officer Amanda Wanke.

How to use DART Bike Racks:

Loading and unloading a bike takes less than 20 seconds.

  1. Once the bus comes to a complete stop, make sure the driver sees you before stepping in front of the bike rack.
  2. Squeeze the release handle at the top of the rack and lower down.
  3. Lift your bike into the wheel slots.
  4. Lift the support arm at the side of the rack up and over the front bike tire until secure.
  5. When exiting the bus, let the driver know you will be unloading your bike and complete the above steps in reverse.

People wanting to plan a Bike & Ride trip can do so using Google Maps, at ridedart.com or by contacting the DART customer service team. The mobile app, RideTime, is also available on Apple, Android or Windows phones, providing the exact arrival time of buses using GPS location.

In addition to Bike & Ride, DART offers secure bike storage at DART Central Station, 620 Cherry Street, Des Moines. The indoor storage with changing rooms is available for a $50 annual fee plus a $50 one-time deposit.
