Dump the Pump Day is celebrated by many jurisdictions and public transit systems across the United States to encourage people to ride public transit (instead of driving) to save money. The day is dedicated to raising awareness that public transportation helps improve the environment and conserves fuel. Public transit also offers the opportunity for communities to flourish and expand. The American Public Transportation Association estimates for every dollar invested in public transportation, the economic return is $4.
In Frederick County, public transit bus stops are within 1/4 of a mile of 85 percent of all Frederick businesses. In fiscal year 2016, TransIT Services of Frederick County provided more than 677,000 trips locally.
