The Interurban Transit Partnership (The Rapid) board voted unanimously Wednesday to ask voters in Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Walker, and Wyoming to put a millage renewal proposal on the Nov. 7, 2017 ballot that would continue local funding for the public transportation system for the next 12 years.
There is no additional cost to taxpayers for a renewal. If approved at its current rate of 1.47 mills, The Rapid’s 12-year funding proposal would mean the owner of a $100,000 home with a taxable value of $50,000 would continue to pay roughly $73.50 per year in their local property tax to support public transportation.
The Rapid averages nearly 1 million rides every month and provides approximately 12 million rides annually.
Registered voters who live within the boundaries of the six communities served by The Rapid can vote on the millage renewal at their precinct on Election Day Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.
Voters can also obtain an absentee ballot from the local government office where they are registered. The deadline to apply to receive an absent voter ballot by mail is 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017.
