The following is a statement from the American Public Transportation Association on Hurricane Irma:
Hurricane Irma has caused massive power outages, flooding, and blocked rail lines and roads across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The American Public Transportation Association staff has been in contact with many of its public transit systems to offer support and discuss how we can be of assistance and I connected with Lisa Bacot, executive director of the Florida Public Transportation Association.
Many of these transit systems are running low on fuel, and are having to operate facilities with temporary generators. These are difficult work conditions for our colleagues to balance while they begin to get back on their feet.
The industry supported Texas transit agency employees after Hurricane Harvey hit. Now, we are joining with FPTA to donate gift cards to affected transit employees in Florida. They have a long way to go, so I hope we can count on your generosity once again.
Public transit systems are currently evaluating Hurricane Harvey and Irma's damage, and will use the FEMA process to determine what is needed to get operations back to normal. This process will take weeks.
