The city of San Luis Obispo Transit reduced its diesel fuel consumption by 14 percent in Fiscal Year 2017/18, a direct result of the service improvements from the city of San Luis Obispo adopted 2017-22 Short Range Transit Plan implemented June 2017. During Fiscal Year 2016/17, SLO Transit consumed 115,021 gallons of diesel fuel to provide its transit services to the public. However, for Fiscal Year 2017/18 only 101,330 gallons were needed. The 13,690 less gallons are significant when considering that the city expanded its transit services later into the evenings on both weekdays and weekends across all routes, as part of the plan.
“What has really helped are the newly streamlined routes. With these changes we are consistently better serving the public and have greatly reduced the amount of supplement ad-hoc services needed to maintain on-time performance than in the prior transit model,” said San Luis Obispo Transit Manager, Gamaliel Anguiano. “This improved efficiency will not only help stem costs from increasing fuel prices but will also further emphasize transit’s role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.”
The reduction of 13,690 gallons, by some estimates, equates to approximately 140 less metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. These improved outcomes are in line with city’s adopted Major City Goals: Multi Modal Transportation, Fiscal Sustainability & Responsibility and Climate Action. The Public is encouraged to save on transportation costs and help save the environment by riding more public transit.
