Caltrans continues to reduce its carbon footprint through the launch of its employee BikeShare Program, which makes on-site bicycles available for staff as a transit option. The bikes were procured from Practical Cycle in West Sacramento, funded through a grant from Kaiser Permanente, and will be used for traveling to meetings where a vehicle might otherwise be used.
This video shows how employees plan to use the bicycles and the excitement surrounding the added choice of “going green.” All staff using the BikeShare program will undergo mandatory training to ensure safe riding practices. As part of moving toward a fully integrated transportation system, Caltrans is committed to tripling the number of bicyclists by 2020, and intends to use the BikeShare Program as a template for other BikeShare Programs throughout California.
