The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) will dramatically expand its transit family by hiring at least 125 new Bus Operators and Journey Level Mechanics in the next 90 days.

The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) will dramatically expand its transit family by hiring at least 125 new Bus Operators and Journey Level Mechanics in the next 90 days. This is an invitation to the best and brightest who are willing to commit to the largest service enhancement in AC Transit’s history. The most talented candidates for Bus Operators and Journey Level Mechanics will directly support the Service Expansion Plan or SEP. The SEP will increase overall bus service by up to 14 percent, making AC Transit a more reliable, convenient and efficient transit network.

AC Transit is seeking people who are and want to make a difference in the East Bay. Bus Operator candidates do not require previous experience as a bus operator. Instead, AC Transit will provide all training including what’s necessary to obtain a California Class-B Commercial Driver’s license.

Interested Bus Operator candidates should have:

  • A valid driver’s license for at least seven (7) years;
  • A safe driving record; and
  • Pass a criminal background check

Each candidate successfully placed in Operator training course will receive full pay and benefits. AC Transit Bus Operators earn up to $28.20 per hour and a complete benefits package.

“The AC Transit Board recently approved the Service Expansion Plan because it will enhance the quality of life in the East Bay,” said H. E. Christian Peeples, AC Transit board president. “But service expansions are impossible without expanding our existing team of talented bus operators and mechanics. Both positions are the backbone to our safe daily operations.”

AC Transit has environmentally green transit, and Journey Level Mechanics are vital to the District maintaining that cutting edge technology. AC Transit has been operating zero emission hydrogen fuel coaches for over a decade, and newly selected Journey Level Mechanics will have the opportunity to work on this new technology as well as perform diesel engine maintenance. Journey Level Mechanics earn $33.31 per hour with full time hours (40 hours per week) and a complete benefits package.

The ideal Journey Level Mechanic candidate should possess:

  • Four (4) – six (6) years of experience;
  • Pass a written exam; and
  • Pass a hands-on mechanical exam

“When I assumed the position of General Manager, one of my primary goals was to deliver more service to meet the East Bay’s growing demand,” said Michael Hursh, AC Transit general manager. “With the passage of Measure BB, we’re now entrusted with the financial resources to expand our transit network and make it more reliable. Expansion is a responsibility I take personally and want our newly hired staff to share in that commitment.”

The SEP will roll-out over the next 12-months beginning in June 2016. In addition to recruiting bus operators and mechanics, AC Transit has also purchased 80 new 40 foot buses from Hayward, CA, based Gillig Corporation. It is expected that all 80 buses will be delivered by July 2016. AC Transit says that the bus purchase represents a long-term investment in local jobs and the East Bay economy.

AC Transit offers an employee benefits package including:

  • Full benefits for employee and dependents soon after hire
  • Medical benefits free of deductibles
  • District sponsored pension
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Continual training
  • Employee development programs
  • Excellent career promotional/growth opportunities
