As a 2018 federal deadline approaches for positive train control implementation, HNTB Corporation continues to expand its PTC and rail systems expertise and operations to assist transit and rail clients in moving toward compliance.

As a 2018 federal deadline approaches for positive train control implementation, HNTB Corporation continues to expand its PTC and rail systems expertise and operations to assist transit and rail clients in moving toward compliance. To help them address growing infrastructure needs and the approaching legislative deadline, the firm added two experienced experts:

  • Michael Bogonovich is a senior systems project engineer with more than three decades of experience delivering transportation projects. He specializes in the design, integration, manufacture, commissioning, operations and maintenance of rail transit vehicles, control and security systems and electrical systems for facilities. Prior to joining HNTB, Bogonovich worked with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority as program manager and the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit as senior rail systems engineer. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, with a minor in electrical engineering and metallurgy, from the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Michael Haverstick is a PTC systems project engineer with more than 26 years of experience in transit and rail communication systems. His experience includes communication system design, specification development, project management, communication system installations, and maintenance management of large scale integrated communications systems. Prior to joining HNTB, he worked with the Regional Transportation District as communication system project and technical lead for Denver Eagle P3, and Dallas Area Rapid Transit as manager of communication systems on the Orange and Blue Line Design-Build Light Rail Expansion Projects. He holds an associate’s degree in electronic engineering technology from Pennco Technical Institute.

Both Bogonovich and Haverstick are based in Denver, and support the firm’s rail systems and PTC projects across the nation.

PTC is a train control technology intended to prevent train-to-train collisions, overspeed derailments, incursions into established work zone limits, and the movement of a train through misaligned track switches. In late 2015, Congress extended the deadline for implementation to Dec. 31, 2018. HNTB is providing a range of planning, design, implementation and support activities on PTC projects in an advisory capacity nationally and for transit agencies around the country.

“Great progress has been made in PTC compliance, but there is much work to be done to meet the looming 2018 federal deadline,” said Ian Choudri, HNTB national rail and transit business development director and senior vice president. “Both Michael Bogonovich and Michael Haverstick provide our clients with technical counsel and expertise as PTC roll out moves through installation and testing.”
