As discussions continue in the U.S. Senate surrounding highly automated vehicles (HAVs), the Intelligent Transportation Society of America sent a letter reiterating its support for the AV START Act (S. 1885).
S. 1885, the “AV START Act,” would establish federal oversight of how manufacturers address the safety of HAVs — there are currently no federal regulations specifically governing the safety of these vehicles.
“We are on the cusp of a safer future transformed by automated vehicles technologies, which have the potential to eliminate the 94 percent of crashes caused by human error,” said Shailen Bhatt, president and CEO of ITS America.
The letter was signed by Bhatt; Carlos Braceras, P.E., executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation and ITS America board chair; and Gary Smyth, executive director, global research and development laboratories, General Motors and ITS America Board vice chair.
