The brand-new online program is a continuation of the Valley Metro Workforce Development program providing middle school students with virtual learning opportunities about engineering and transit concepts.

Valley Metro and its engineering partner firm PGH Wong Engineering, Inc., launched the Engineers of the Future virtual program.

The brand-new online program is a continuation of the Valley Metro Workforce Development program providing middle school students with virtual learning opportunities about engineering and transit concepts that encourage a new generation of skilled workers.

“Our mentors are encouraging young students, especially girls and people of color who are underrepresented in the engineering field, to pursue a career in STEM after taking part in the program,” said Scott Smith, Valley Metro CEO. “Engineers of the Future provides students with a pathway to success, even during the pandemic.”

Students learn remotely from Valley Metro engineer-mentors through video-taped lessons and transportation-themed projects. The mentors will help students build balloon cars, bridges, marshmallow slingshots and circus balance projects, while simultaneously teaching a variety of scientific concepts. Students will also take virtual field trips to Valley Metro Rail construction sites and watch special guest lectures to learn more about STEM careers. The student engineers will also receive a grade-level appropriate book as part of the program.

Engineers of the Future is offered to the community as part of the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub and Northwest Extension Phase II light rail projects’ Workforce Development Program. This free program is:

Available to middle-school students.

  • Offers a safe way to learn remotely during COVID-19.
  • Uses the most basic household items for project builds.
  • Offers virtual lessons that are available 24/7 on the Engineers of the Future website and YouTube channel.
  • Provides free books to students while supplies last.

This online program offers a unique opportunity to introduce students to careers in the engineering field.
