APTA recognizes Metrolink with top sustainability award
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has recognized one of its member organizations for continued achievements in sustainability, with Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink) achieving the Gold recognition in the APTA Sustainability Commitment Program.
Public transit agencies and businesses voluntarily choose to join the APTA Sustainability Commitment program and pledge to implement processes and actions that create continuous improvements in environmental, social and economic sustainability. Based on specific measurable achievements, organizations are given Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Level recognition. First started in 2009, 135 public transit agencies and businesses have signed on to the APTA Sustainability Commitment. Currently, 49 signatories have received higher level recognition.
“We are thrilled to recognize the continued work of Metrolink as they build service for a more sustainable future,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “Metrolink’s leadership in the sustainability and social equity realms, and the successful results of their actions, serves as a road map and an inspiration to other agencies.”
GOLD Level – Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink)
Despite many challenges posed by the pandemic, Metrolink has worked tirelessly to honor its commitment to sustainability. Metrolink put in various measures to ease its environmental impacts ranging from installing train wash water reclamation system, upgrading storm water management system, purchasing electric non-revenue vehicles, recycling e-waste products and more.
On the social equity front, Metrolink conducted an accessibility and affordability study which addresses structural inequities in the delivery of regional transportation service throughout its service area. Additionally, Metrolink created an Equity Atlas which is a map-based tool to assess the geographic distribution of marginalized communities.
Most recently, Metrolink became the first passenger rail agency in the nation to power 100 percent of all its locomotives with renewable fuel in February 2022. Locomotives are now powered by cleaner burning recycled natural fats and vegetable oils. This transition is a part of Metrolink’s continued efforts to reducing emissions and improving the air quality.
