Six transit agencies join federal ‘The Challenge to Save Lives from Overdose’ initiative; Updates from FTA, Denver RTD, NYC Transit

Denver RTD, BART, NJ Transit Police, SEPTA and WMATA train and equip officers with Narcan while MBTA is working to make Narcan available at all Red Line Heavy Rail Stations.
The rule would require U.S. transit agencies to create a rail transit protection program, implement comprehensive training for workers and ensure that unsafe acts and conditions are reported.
The agency has sworn in 56 police officers after only having 19 in August 22; the goal is to reach 119 officers on staff by the end of 2024.
The high-definition LCD screens are installed on board near the entry stairwell and continuously stream live video feeds from existing security camera infrastructure onboard buses.
The TTC’s campaign comes as a new internal audit report shows fare evasion on the TTC is at an all-time high with the agency losing approximately C$124 million in 2023.
The pilot program will limit illegal activities and address long-standing complaints from customers on select elevator locations at high-usage rail stations.
Wickramasinghe will oversee the agency's safety compliance and initiatives, as well as internal and external security efforts.
The training program expands the partnership between Samaritans and Keolis through training of frontline personnel to identify people at risk, developing strategies for engaging with a person in crisis and connecting someone in need with mental health resources.
