Amtrak completes early construction activities for new Frederick Douglass Tunnel

The first project, which took place on Track A from Winans to Bridge interlockings, kicked off March 10 in the Halethorpe and West Baltimore areas and was finished in early June.
Amtrak has completed early construction activities in advance of building the new Frederick Douglass Tunnel. The first project kicked off March 10 in the Halethorpe and West Baltimore areas and was finished in early June.
The work took place on Track A from Winans to Bridge interlockings and included:
Replacing aging wooden ties with approximately 13,500 new concrete ties
Installing approximately 28,000 feet of new rail
Completing track drainage improvements along the approximately five-mile section.
Amtrak expects its contractors to begin further construction activities within the next six months.
