MBTA Green Line C Branch 12-day full-access closure successfully completed on schedule

July 26, 2022
The closure delivered improved safety and dependability to the branch, with the Green Line E Branch to close beginning in August.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Capital Transformation team successfully completed the 12-day full-access closure on the Green Line C Branch, delivering critical safety and dependability improvements across the branch.

During the closure, crews replaced 1,500 feet of track from St. Mary’s to Kenmore Stations and installed wayside equipment for the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS).

“The Capital Transformation team has successfully completed two major surges across the Green Line this summer,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “The timely completion of both closures allows the MBTA to accelerate safety and dependability efforts across the system. Although construction can be disruptive, I want to thank all Green Line riders for their patience and understanding during this time of improvement.”

With the C Branch now complete and regular service having returned on July 23, the Green Line Transformation team will be moving to the E Branch of the Green Line for a 16-day full-access closure. Beginning Aug. 6, crews will be replacing approximately 2,000 feet of track across the branch and installing GLTPS wayside equipment.

Most of the scheduled track work will take place between Longwood Avenue and Brigham Circle Stations. Prep work, including the placement and welding of rail, will take place at Northeastern Station beginning Aug. 1, and will end on Aug. 5. Prep work will not impact regularly scheduled service.

“Capital Transformation continues to work diligently to deliver the best service possible for all Green Line riders,” said MBTA Chief of Capital Transformation Angel Peña. “With two branches now complete, the team is excited to shift our focus to the E branch, bringing critical improvements to the area. It is our team’s top priority to keep all riders informed throughout the duration of the 16-day closure.”

Alternative service will be available for all E branch riders throughout the closure. The Route 39 bus will be enhanced with accessible buses that will carry passengers from Heath Street station to Copley station and back.
