The Dubai RTA tram is the first turnkey tramway system in the Gulf and it is the world's first 100 percent catenary-free line.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) tram is the first turnkey tramway system in the Gulf and it is the world's first 100 percent catenary-free line. 

The tram opened in November 2014, connecting the Dubai metro and Palm Jumeirah monorail, along Al Sufouh Road and Jumeirah Beach Road from Mall of the Emirates to the Dubai Marina. The 6-1/2 mile line links 11 air-conditioned stations and will extend to just over 9 miles once the second phase is complete. 

Alstom was the leader of the consortium and system integrator. The turnkey contract included the design and supply of the Citadis tram, track laying, electrification, URBALIS CBTC signaling, security and communication systems, ICONIS integrated operation control center, platform screen doors, ticketing system, and signaling at road junctions. Alstom is also responsible for the maintenance of the transport system for 13 years.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , ruler of Dubai, appointed Al Tayer as the chairman of the board and executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The RTA oversees Strategy & Corporate Governance, Corporate & Administrative Support Services, Corporate Technical Support Services, the Public Transport Agency, the Traffic & Roads Agency, the Rail Agency, Dubai Taxi, and the Licensing Agency
