Campaigners have hit out at comments made by Lord Adonis to leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire, on the business case for the HS2 plans.
According to members of the Action Groups Against High Speed Two, the former minister has 'repeatedly made false claims' about costs for the controversial 'bullet train'.
Part of Lord Adonis's case said upgrading the current system would cost more money than HS2 but would offer only an increase in capacity LORD ADONIS by two-thirds of that which HS2 will provide.
He said connectivity would also be improved - not only to London but to the East Midlands, the north and Scotland.
But according to Jerry Marshall, chairman of the AGAHST Federation, this not the case. Campaigners are keen to uprate the existing infrastructure saying it is a better alternative to High Speed Rail.
"Rail Package Two meets all the demand forecast at a fraction of the cost of HS2 and gives better value for money," he said.
"If we upgrade the existing infrastructure it will not cost more than HS2. It is dishonest to say it would."
The controversial pounds 34 billion scheme has come under fire from many anti-HS2 groups across the region as the proposed non-stop London to Birmingham rail line will see trains thunder through parts of Coventry and Warwickshire.
Last month, more than 1,000 people turned up in Kenilworth to learn more about the plans.
