Hatch Mott MacDonald Canada Wins Award for Innovation in Rail and Transit
Hatch Mott MacDonald Canada announced that it has won an award for Innovation in Rail and Transit at the 2011 Be Inspired Awards recently held by Bentley Systems, Inc. Bentley Systems is a leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure. HMM was honored for its work on the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension – Twin Tunnels.
The awards were presented at a gala dinner during the annual Be Inspired: Thought Leadership in Infrastructure event, held Nov. 8-9, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Five independent panels of jurors, comprising accomplished Bentley users and distinguished industry experts, selected the Be Inspired Awards winners from 57 finalists. Those finalists had been previously chosen from the nominations submitted by 270 organizations in 42 countries.
The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) provides a critical extension for the existing Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway system. The alignment consists of an 8.4 kilometer extension of the existing Spadina Line from its current terminus at Downsview Station. The project includes six cut and cover subway stations that will be interconnected with twin bored tunnels, constructed using earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). The alignment crosses beneath numerous buildings, railway tracks, a provincial highway, city arterial roads, major utilities, conservation areas and water courses.
In accordance with the TTC's CAD standards and in consideration of the technical challenges posed by design, Bentley software was considered the ideal toolset to undertake project execution. Major cost benefits during the design phase were realized from multidisciplinary coordination of the TYSSE tunnel design in 3-D using the Bentley software. 3-D modeling ensured a fully coordinated design and enabled HMM to meet the demanding and sensitive design schedule while maintaining high standards of quality.
"Bentley software enabled Hatch Mott MacDonald to meet critical schedule milestones during execution of the tunnel design for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, while maintaining high quality standards. Multidisciplinary coordination, through use of the 3D modeling environment, and graphical presentations were key success factors enhancing communications amongst team members, clients and stakeholders." Matthew Geary, Tunnel Discipline lead, Hatch Mott MacDonald.
