The New York Transit Museum Presents The Next Level: East Side Access Photographs by Hiroyuki Suzuki
The New York Transit Museum presents its final exhibition for the Grand Central Terminal Centennial year by celebrating the future of one of the world’s great train stations.
The Next Level: East Side Access Photographs by Hiroyuki Suzuki, will provide a glimpse of the major construction project taking place underneath Grand Central that will transform transportation in New York City and beyond. The East Side Access project will bring Long Island Rail Road trains into a vast new terminal being built 18 stories below Grand Central. The photo exhibit will be on display in the Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store, located in Grand Central Terminal, from July 23 through Oct. 27.
The exhibition features more than 55 dramatic black and white photographs of the underground caverns of the nation’s largest single infrastructure project to date — the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) East Side Access project. By focusing on this massive infrastructure project as an incomplete work in progress, photographer Hiroyuki Suzuki captures the fragility, endurance and evolution of the city as new mega-projects anticipate its continued growth.
“While the majority of Centennial celebrations so far have focused on Grand Central’s rich and storied history, The Next Level aims to break new ground on the terminal’s future,” said Gabrielle Shubert, director of the New York Transit Museum. “The East Side Access Project has created miles of colossal caverns in New York City that will forever change Grand Central, yet the underground project has remained virtually invisible to the general public. Until now.”
This is the sixth and final installment in a year-long series of Transit Museum exhibitions celebrating Grand Central Terminal’s Centennial.
