The Economic Impacts of Transportation Companies in Quebec
The Urban Transit Association of Quebec (ATUQ) unveiled the results of a major study on the economic impacts of its member companies that serve the largest cities in the province, Montreal, Quebec, Levis, Laval, Longueuil, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières, Saguenay and Sherbrooke. This study clearly demonstrates that public transit is a stimulant for the Quebec economy and an engine business that creates tens of thousands of quality jobs and contributes billions of dollars into the economy of Quebec.
Highlights of the STM
The study reveals that in 2013, among others, the Société de transport de Montreal (STM) has supported 11,649 direct jobs and 288 indirect 2, for a total of 13,937 jobs.
The STM activities generated wealth because:

"Public transit is an essential part of the urban fabric. In Montreal, besides the fact that it allows citizens to rely on an accessible and economical alternative for trips, it contributes to the competitiveness and attractiveness of our city government. It also helps reduce congestion and therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Public transit also reduces health costs and costs related to road accidents. Finally, it is also an important driver of economic activity as evidenced by this large study ATUQ,"said Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the board of the STM and the ATUQ.
